Emilie Autumn: Twisted Fairy
Till the day i die my belief won't. The belief that some of the best music can't be heard on the radio, among others. And most of these beliefs are gathered on one single woman: Emilie Autumn.
She has proven to me (and i hope to all her "muffins", as she calls her fans) a large list of things, and like most of the lists of the world, this one is just partial: She has proven that coreographies and fireworks aren't the only way to give a live concert apart from the music; that musicians can also open up to fans; that beauty there isn't just one; that beautiful girls also read shakespeare; that the electric violin rules; that burlesque is more than awesome, and many more.
As many things that are beautiful in this world, the word "Victoriandustrial" doesn't officially exist but in the mind. In this case, it is how Emilie calls her musical genre; one as amazing as herself (no other thing could be).
Emilie Autumn Lidell (she's a descendant of Alice Lidell) started her interest for music since her early days, more exactly for the violin, but also classical music. She has continued ever since, dying her hair, developing her music, her style and dealing with the bipolar disorder that send her to a mental asylum.
Altough it was her known ancestor the one that inspired a whole land of fantasy, it is Emilie and her lovely Blody Crumpets the ones that seem taken out of a deep rabbit hole into the ruthless surface. Because there is not Laurel wihout Hardy, and the Stooges are not one, even tough EA is amazing herself, her shows wouldn't be as unique as they are without these three. Speaking of it, i have to say that Emilie's live performances are truly freaking shrines of the alternative stream: The victorian setup, the burlesque, the self-made costumes, the cupcakes (that she throws to the public), the smoking teacups, the Rat Game, EA and the Crumpets... and obviously the music, are better watched than explained. A way still alive, started since the classical style of On a Day..., passing the softness of the ethereal Enchant and now with the yet to be released F.L.A.G (Fight Like a Girl)
Personality is just one, but characters are too much, and Emilie Autumn has as many as stripes her socks. So it wouldn't be fair to talk solely about the musician, 'cause frankly, as a person, she's fascinating: as said before, she started her interest in classical music and violin from a very young age, and for this reason she quit school at around age ten to focus on her musical training, because "school life was no more than an inconvenient distraction". As we know human friendships are stablished by the similarities beetween, and being that unique, the freaky descendant of Lewis Carrol's muse lived on her own. So it is no surprise that she makes the (amazing) costumes on her shows herself and also plays most of the instruments involved in her songs.
Her bipolar disorder and her phobia for childbirth drove her to abort an undesired pregnancy she had, which led to a (luckily) failed attempt of suicide and eventually to a mental asylum in where she was kept under suicide check. Unlike her website, her life wasn't pink colour. Fortunately she's more than alive now, still making albums and drinking tea in and off stage, hopefully for a long time.
